The Writers Guild of America unveiled its picks for the 101 best-written TV series of all time over the weekend, and The Sopranos whacked the competition. The Most Balanced Rosetta Stone Review You'll Ever Read. Note: I’ve recommended a far better, more comprehensive (and less expensive) alternative to Rosetta Stone below. Here are the Spanish and French editions. For other language editions, select them here: Click here to choose a language.. Spanish. French. Italian. Russian. Arabic. Hindi. Chinese. German. Korean. Portuguese. Japanese. English. For lots of language learning content and helpful advice, make sure to stay connected on Facebook.***One of the most frequently asked questions in language learning discussions is whether or not Rosetta Stone is worth the investment. Does it work or is it just a well- marketed waste of time? A quick online search for “Rosetta Stone review” yields many pages of reviews, nearly all of which are either extremely negative (directing you to an alternative product) or deceitfully positive (trying to earn a hefty commission on an expensive product). Book with us for the lowest rate at Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island. Because of this it can be a challenge for fence- sitters to find reliable feedback. Today I’m going to offer you some balanced insight on the method and content of Rosetta Stone, and whether or not it can be regarded as an effective learning tool. Although there are some affiliate links here there are no Rosetta Stone commission links in this article and no links to my own product. I should also add that this review will not cover the additional features of Version 4 TOTALe (games, mobile apps and the very inflexible, teacher- directed lessons). What really matters at the end of the day is whether or not the core product is effective or not. As always, you’re welcome to share your thoughts and experience in the comment section below! What gives Rosetta Stone a notorious reputation. A lot of the criticism of Rosetta Stone stems from its biblically- proportioned price tag but not enough is actually said about how the software is intended to work. I’ll attempt to do that here. I will state from the outset however that I agree with most that the program is indeed outrageously expensive. At the time of this writing, I’ve found the complete packages of the TOTALe version selling for as high as $5. USD through various vendors online (the Rosetta Stone Korean site is actually selling levels 1- 5 of Spanish for over $7. USD!!!). For the average home user that is unjustifiably expensive. UPDATE: The RS pricing on its website has changed significantly since this review was first written. There are currently 3 purchase options (all of which offer exactly the same content) listed on the Rosetta Stone product page: Online Subscription With App: Price: $1. Downloadable: Price: $1. CD- ROM: Price: $1. The price remains steep however. Now, I’m sure that the speech recognition technology, research and expensive marketing campaigns account for most of this cost but for the average home user looking for a foreign language solution that’s well and truly beyond their means. Just to give you an idea, these are just a few other things this kind of money could get you: Approximately 2. Roughly 1. 0 in- person, private lessons with a language instructor in your own area (approx. For those living in Europe, several return flights to another European destination on a low- budget airline and a week or two of accommodation in an inner- city hostel to practise the language with the locals. For those in the US or Australia, it’s a large chunk of the cost for a budget trip to Latin America or South East Asia to immerse yourself in the local language. Almost any book or audio course on the market which are usually priced anywhere between $3. I praise italki a lot on this blog (check it out here if you haven’t already). One extremely cheap yet good option for people who like to use music to learn languages is Earworms Musical Brain Trainer which sells for about $1. I’ve ever seen (see my review here). Or at a slightly higher price (though much lower than Rosetta Stone) the audio component of the Rocket Languages series (mentioned above) is outstanding. I’ve personally used it for several languages and I can’t emphasize enough just how comprehensive and good it is (see my review here). Select a language here to sample it and compare the pricing with Rosetta Stone: Click here to choose a language.. Spanish. French. Italian. Russian. Arabic. Hindi. Chinese. German. Korean. Portuguese. Japanese. English. Sign Language. I’ve also listed some other excellent alternatives on my Essential Language Learning Tools page. There are just so many better alternatives to spend money on! It’s true that some people have no problem affording Rosetta Stone and there is of course the option of buying version 3 or a second- hand copy which is a significantly cheaper option. For those of you who do have RS or are planning to get it anyway despite the cost, keep reading! Join the people who are making a diffrence in their lives! Welcome to Get. Hypnosis. What skills should butlers have? How long do you need to train to become a butler? 6. How much money can butlers earn? What is a Butler? Butlers used to work in the homes of European Royal families and landowners, but now they are more likely to work for the super- rich in the United States and the Middle East. Modern butlers are similar to managers. A very wealthy person may have many employees, such as cleaners, gardeners or chauffeurs and the butler should organise this team so they all work efficiently together. Butlers must be well- dressed: they should wear classic, clean clothes and have a neat hairstyle. In addition, they must have excellent communication skills. The super rich often have houses in more than one country: many butlers need to be able to speak more than one language. In order to become a butler, you can attend a special academy, where the course usually lasts around 2 years. Nowadays, butlers can earn a lot of money. In America, butlers with good experience can earn between $2. United States or the Middle East. Cleaners, gardeners or chauffeurs. Classic clean clothes. Excellent communication skills. Chickenpox | Symptoms, Causes and Treatment. What is chickenpox? What is chicken pox? Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP and Clinical Director of patient. Chickenpox is an infection caused by the varicella- zoster virus. Overview. Chickenpox is a common illness that mainly affects children and causes an itchy, spotty rash. Most children will catch chickenpox at some point. The immune system makes proteins called antibodies during the infection. These fight the virus and then provide lifelong protection against it (immunity). Therefore, it is uncommon to have more than one bout of chickenpox in a lifetime. Most people have chickenpox as a child. Most children get chickenpox before the age of 1. About 9 in 1. 0 people have had it by the age of 1. It is uncommon for adults to have chickenpox. What are the symptoms of chickenpox? Symptoms are usually more severe in adults than in children. Expect to have a few uncomfortable days. High temperature (fever), aches and headache often start a day or so before a rash appears. Spots (a rash). Spots appear in crops. They can be anywhere on the body and sometimes also in the mouth. Several crops may develop over several days. Some people are covered in spots; others have only a few. Loss of appetite, tiredness and feeling sick are common. The fever and generally feeling unwell can last several days. The blisters gradually dry up and scab. If it is started after this time it is not likely to have much of an effect. So, if started on time, an antiviral medicine may help to reduce the severity of the illness. Antiviral medication is especially useful in situations where chickenpox can be more serious. For example, for people who have a poor immune system, newborn babies, and for pregnant women. Note: antiviral medication is not normally advised for healthy children who develop chickenpox.)Are there any complications? Therefore, although serious complications are rare, it is best to be watchful. See a doctor if you develop any worrying symptoms that you are unsure about such as: Breathing problems. Weakness. Drowsiness. Convulsions. Pains or headaches which become worse despite paracetamol or ibuprofen. Being unable to take fluids, due to a severe rash in the mouth. A very severe rash, or a rash which bruises or bleeds into the skin ('haemorrhagic rash'). Becoming generally more and more unwell. In general, complications are uncommon. However, some people have a higher risk of developing complications from chickenpox. Anyone in the following groups should see a doctor urgently if they have symptoms of chickenpox: Pregnant women. People with a poor immune system. For example, people with leukaemia, with HIV/AIDS, taking steroid medication or having chemotherapy. People with heart or lung disease. People with severe skin conditions. Very young babies - especially those less than 1 month old (neonates). Shingles. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox and so is a delayed complication of chickenpox. Anyone who has had chickenpox in the past may develop shingles. Shingles is an infection of a nerve and the area of skin supplied by the nerve. It causes a rash and pain in a band- like local area along the affected nerve. About 1 in 5 people have shingles at some time in their lives. It can occur at any age, but it is most common in people over the age of 5. The reason why shingles may occur is because the virus does not completely go after you have chickenpox. Some virus particles remain inactive in the nerve roots next to your spinal cord. They do no harm there, and cause no symptoms. For reasons that are not clear, the virus may begin to multiply again (reactivate). This is often years later. The reactivated virus travels along the nerve to the skin to cause shingles. See separate leaflet called Shingles (Herpes Zoster) for details. Note: you can catch chickenpox from being exposed to a person with shingles if you have not had chickenpox yourself. However, you cannot catch shingles from a person with chickenpox, or catch shingles from a person with shingles. Chickenpox and pregnancy. Untreated clinical depression is a serious problem. Change can be stressful for anyone and can be especially difficult for a person with Alzheimer's disease. It can increase the fear and fatigue of trying to make sense out of an increasingly confusing world. Situations affecting behavior may include: Moving to a new residence or nursing home Changes in a familiar environment or caregiver arrangements Misperceived threats Admission to a hospital Being asked to bathe or change clothes Identifying what has triggered a behavior can often help in selecting the best approach to deal with it. Even though the chief cause of behavioral symptoms is the effect of Alzheimer's disease on the brain, an examination may reveal other treatable conditions that are contributing to the behavior. Contributing conditions may include: Difficulty with communication. Because people with Alzheimer's gradually lose the ability to communicate, it's important to regularly monitor their comfort and anticipate their needs. Learn more: Communication Tips. Drug side effects. Many people with Alzheimer's take prescription medications for other health issues. Drug side effects or interactions among drugs can affect behavior. Discomfort from infections or other conditions. As the disease gets worse, those with Alzheimer's have increasing difficulty communicating with others about their experience. As a result, they may be unable to report symptoms of common illnesses. Pain from infections of the urinary tract, ear or sinuses may lead to restlessness or agitation. Discomfort from a full bladder, constipation, or feeling too hot or too cold also may be expressed through behavior. Uncorrected problems with hearing or vision. These can contribute to confusion and frustration and foster a sense of isolation. Non- drug approaches. Non- drug approaches to managing behavior symptoms promote physical and emotional comfort. Many of these strategies aim to identify and address needs that the person with Alzheimer's may have difficulty expressing as the disease progresses. Non- drug approaches should always be tried first. Steps to developing successful non- drug treatments include: Recognizing that the person is not just "acting mean or ornery," but is having further symptoms of the disease Identifying the cause and how the symptom may relate to the experience of the person with Alzheimer's Changing the environment to resolve challenges and obstacles to comfort, security and ease of mind. Coping tips. Monitor personal comfort. Check for pain, hunger, thirst, constipation, full bladder, fatigue, infections and skin irritation. Maintain a comfortable room temperature. Avoid being confrontational or arguing about facts. For example, if a person expresses a wish to go visit a parent who died years ago, don't point out that the parent is dead. Instead, say, "Your mother is a wonderful person. I would like to see her too." Redirect the person's attention. Try to remain flexible, patient and supportive by responding to the emotion, not the behavior. Create a calm environment. Avoid noise, glare, insecure space and too much background distraction, including television. Allow adequate rest between stimulating events. Weeks to years for recovery[2]Frequency. Deaths. 7. 5% of those affected[1]Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rapid- onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system.[2] The initial symptoms are typically changes in sensation or pain along with muscle weakness, beginning in the feet and hands.[2] This often spreads to the arms and upper body with both sides being involved.[2] The symptoms develop over hours to a few weeks.[2] During the acute phase, the disorder can be life- threatening with about 1. Some are affected by changes in the function of the autonomic nervous system, which can lead to dangerous abnormalities in heart rate and blood pressure.[2]The cause is unknown.[2] The underlying mechanism involves an autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves and damages their myelin insulation.[2] Sometimes this immune dysfunction is triggered by an infection or, less commonly, surgery or vaccination.[1][2] The diagnosis is usually made based on the signs and symptoms, through the exclusion of alternative causes, and supported by tests such as nerve conduction studies and examination of the cerebrospinal fluid.[2] There are a number of subtypes based on the areas of weakness, results of nerve conduction studies, and the presence of certain antibodies.[4] It is classified as an acute polyneuropathy.[1]In those with severe weakness, prompt treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins or plasmapheresis, together with supportive care, will lead to good recovery in the majority.[2] Recovery may take weeks to years.[2] About a third have some permanent weakness.[2] Globally death occurs in about 7. Guillain–Barré syndrome is rare, at one or two cases per 1. The Babinski reflex or Babinski sign is pathalogical (altered or abnormal) reflex of the lower limb which indicates damage to the corticospinal tracts of the spinal cord. Both sexes and all parts of the world have similar rates of disease.[1][2] The syndrome is named after the French neurologists Georges Guillain and Jean Alexandre Barré, who described it with André Strohl in 1. Signs and symptoms[edit]The first symptoms of Guillain–Barré syndrome are numbness, tingling, and pain, alone or in combination. This is followed by weakness of the legs and arms that affects both sides equally and worsens over time.[7][8] The weakness can take half a day to over two weeks to reach maximum severity, and then becomes steady.[8] In one in five people, the weakness continues to progress for as long as four weeks.[4] The muscles of the neck may also be affected, and about half experience involvement of the cranial nerves which supply the head and face; this may lead to weakness of the muscles of the face, swallowing difficulties and sometimes weakness of the eye muscles.[4] In 8%, the weakness affects only the legs (paraplegia or paraparesis).[4] Involvement of the muscles that control the bladder and anus is unusual.[8] In total, about a third of people with Guillain–Barré syndrome continue to be able to walk.[4] Once the weakness has stopped progressing, it persists at a stable level ("plateau phase") before improvement occurs. The plateau phase can take between two days and six months, but the most common duration is a week.[4] Pain- related symptoms affect more than half, and include back pain, painful tingling, muscle pain and pain in the head and neck relating to irritation of the lining of the brain.[4]Many people with Guillain–Barré syndrome have experienced the signs and symptoms of an infection in the 3–6 weeks prior to the onset of the neurological symptoms. This may consist of upper respiratory tract infection (rhinitis, sore throat) or diarrhea.[8]In children, particularly those younger than six years old, the diagnosis can be difficult and the condition is often initially mistaken (sometimes for up to two weeks) for other causes of pains and difficulty walking, such as viral infections,[4] or bone and joint problems.[9]On neurological examination, characteristic features are the reduced power and reduced or absent tendon reflexes (hypo- or areflexia, respectively). However, a small proportion has normal reflexes in affected limbs before developing areflexia, and some may have exaggerated reflexes.[4] In the "Miller Fisher variant" subtype of Guillain–Barré syndrome (see below), a triad of weakness of the eye muscles, abnormalities in coordination, as well as absent reflexes can be found.[8][1. Examples of these are the olfactory (smell), optic (vision), oculomotor (eye movements), abducens (abduction of the eye), facial (facial expression), and vestibulocochlear or statoacoustic (hearing and balance) nerves. Others are named for their relationship to neighboring structures (trochlear nerve), appearance (trigeminal nerve), extent of distribution (vagus nerve), composition (spinal accessory nerve), or location (hypoglossal nerve). Trochlear: Its midsection extends over a trochlea or pulley to reach its insertion on the inferior aspect of the globe. Trigeminal: The nerve divides into 3 divisions distal to the Gasserian ganglion. Vagus: The vagabond or wanderer, it travels long distances in the body. Spinal accessory: This nerve is composed of rootlets from the spinal cord in addition to its medullary component. Hypoglossal: Its course is sublingual in the neck. Knowing the names of the CNs makes it easy to remember their function, thereby making their examination self- evident. The following mnemonic is helpful in recalling the names of the CNs: Oh, oh, oh; to trek and feel a great valley; ah! Another is this: On old Olympus towering tops, a Finn and German viewed some hops. Olfactory nerve - CN IThe olfactory nerves consist of small unmyelinated axons that originate in the olfactory epithelium in the roof of the nasal cavity; they pierce the cribriform plate of the ethmoid and terminate in the olfactory bulb. Lesions of the nerve result in parosmia (altered sense of smell) or anosmia (loss of smell). The common cold is the most frequent cause of dysfunction. Dysfunction can be associated with fractures of the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone. Frontal lobe tumors may compress the olfactory bulb and/or tracts and cause anosmia, but this is rare occurrence. Olfactory function is tested easily by having the patient smell common objects such as coffee or perfume. Commercially available scented scratch papers may also be used. Optic nerve - CN IIThe optic nerve is a collection of axons that relay information from the rods and cones of the retina. The temporal derivations reach the ipsilateral and the nasal derivations the contralateral superior colliculi and the lateral geniculate bodies. From there, axons extend to the calcarine cortex by means of the optic radiation, traversing the temporal (Myer loop) and parietal lobes. Fibers responsible for the pupillary light reflex bypass the geniculate body and reach the pretectal area, from where they innervate the parasympathetic (midline) portion of the third- nerve nucleus, enabling the consensual pupillary reflex. The following testing is appropriate: Acuity, by using the Snellen chart (near and distant vision). Visual fields, by means of confrontation or perimetry if indicated. Color, with use of an Ishihara chart or by using common objects, such as a multicolored tie or color accent markers. Funduscopy. Lesions of the visual pathways result in blindness and pupillary abnormalities, such as the Marcus- Gunn pupil (retinal or optic nerve disease), scotomata, quadrant or hemianopsias (optic tract and radiation), and hemianopsias with macular sparing (calcarine cortex). Oculomotor nerve - CN IIIThe oculomotor nucleus of the nerve is located in the midbrain and innervates the pupillary constrictors; the levator palpebrae superioris; the superior, inferior, and medial recti; and the inferior oblique muscles. Lesions of CN III result in paralysis of the ipsilateral upper eyelid and pupil, leaving the patient unable to adduct and look up or down. The eye is frequently turned out (exotropia). In subtle cases, patients complain of only diplopia or blurred vision. Lesions at the nucleus of the third nerve cause bilateral ptosis, in addition to the findings mentioned above. The exotropia seen in CN III paralysis can be distinguished from that in internuclear ophthalmoplegia because in the latter convergence is preserved. Paralysis of CN III is the only ocular motor nerve lesion that results in diplopia in more than 1 direction, distinguishing itself from CN IV paralysis (which also can result in exotropia). Pupillary involvement is an additional clue to involvement of CN III. Pupil- sparing CN III paralysis occurs in diabetes mellitus, vasculitides of various etiologies, and certain brainstem lesions such as due to multiple sclerosis. Trochlear nerve - CN IVThe nucleus of the nerve is located in the midbrain. It innervates the superior oblique muscle, which incycloducts and infraducts the eye. Trochlear nerve typically allows a person to view the tip of his or her nose. An isolated right superior oblique paralysis results in exotropia to the right (R), double vision that increases on looking to the (L), and head tilt to the right (R). The mnemonic is R, L, R (ie, the marching rule). The rule is L, R, L for left superior oblique paralysis. Keynsham (KAYN- shəm) is a town and civil parish between Bristol and Bath in Somerset, south- west England. It has a population of 1. It was listed in the Domesday Book as Cainesham, which is believed to mean the home of Saint Keyne. The site of the town has been occupied since prehistoric times, and may have been the site of the Roman settlement of Trajectus. The remains of at least two Roman villas have been excavated, and an additional 1. Roman buildings have been detected beneath the Keynsham Hams. Keynsham developed into a medieval market town after Keynsham Abbey was founded around 1. It is situated at the confluence of the River Chew and River Avon and was subject to serious flooding before the creation of Chew Valley Lake and river level controls at Keynsham Lock in 1. The Chew Stoke flood of 1. It was home to the Cadbury's chocolate factory, Somerdale, which opened in 1. It is home to Memorial Park, which is used for the annual town festival and several nature reserves. The town is served by Keynsham railway station on the London- Bristol and Bristol- Southampton trunk routes and is close to the A4 road which bypassed the town in 1. There are schools, religious, sporting, and cultural clubs and venues. History[edit]Roman Trajectus[edit]Evidence of occupation dates back to prehistoric times, and during the Roman period, Keynsham may have been the site of the Roman settlement of Trajectus, which is the Latin word for "bridgehead."[2] It is believed that a settlement around a Roman ford over the River Avon existed somewhere in the vicinity, and the numerous Roman ruins discovered in Keynsham make it a likely candidate for this lost settlement. A trailer containing nearly 640 turkeys is said to have overturned on the motorway. Avon and Somerset police is yet to confirm what happened, but the university has reassured students that lectures will go on as planned this morning. The cemetery was expanded in 1. At the same time as the grand Roman villa was being excavated at Durley Hill Cemetery, a second smaller villa was discovered during the construction of Fry's Somerdale Chocolate Factory.[3] Two fine stone coffins were found, interred with the remains of a man and a woman. The villa and coffins were removed to a place near the gates of the factory grounds, and construction on the factory went ahead. Fry's built in the grounds of the factory a museum which for many years housed the Durley Hill mosaics, the coffins, and numerous other artefacts.[4] In 2. Taylor Wimpey, about to develop the factory site, made a detailed geophysical assessment of the area, and discovered an additional 1. Roman buildings centered around a Roman road beneath Keynsham Hams, with evidence of additional Roman buildings that had been disturbed by quarrying.[2][4]Medieval Keynsham[edit]According to legend, Saint Keyne, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog (Brecon),[5] lived here on the banks of the River Avon during the 5th century. Before settling here, she had been warned by the local King that the marshy area was swarming with snakes, which prevented habitation. St Keyne prayed to the heavens and turned the snakes to stone.[6] The fossil ammonites found in the area were believed to be the result.[7] However, there is no evidence that her cult was ever celebrated in Keynsham. Some scattered archeological evidence suggests that an Anglo- Saxon settlement existed in Keynsham in the High Street area, and that in the 9th century a Minster church existed in Keynsham as well.[8] The earliest documentary reference to Keynsham is in the Anglo- Saxon Chronicle, (c. Cægineshamme, Old English for 'Cæga's Hamm.'[8] The town is also listed in the Domesday Book of 1. Cainesham." It has therefore been suggested that the origin of Keynsham's name is not, in fact Saint Keyne, but from "Ceagin (Caega)."[9]Around 1. Keynsham Abbey was founded by the Victorine congregation of canon regulars. Archeological evidence suggests that the abbey was built over the site of the previous Saxon Minster church.[8] The settlement developed into a medieval market town, and the abbey of Keynsham was given ownership of the Keynsham. Hundred.[1. 0] The Abbey survived until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1. The remains have been designated as a Grade I listed building by English Heritage.[1. Modern history[edit]Keynsham played a part in the Civil War as the Roundheads saved the town and also camped there for the night, using the pub now known as the Lock Keeper Inn as a guard post.[1. During the Monmouth Rebellion of 1. Duke of Monmouth.[1. Bridges Almshouses were built around 1. Post World War II[edit]. Keynsham Clock Tower, removed in 2.
